How to play hangman
Hangman is the classic pencil-and-paper word guessing game. A secret word is hidden behind blank spaces, one dash for every letter. You guess one letter at a time. If the letter is in the word, every place where it appears is revealed. If it is not, one more part of the stick figure is drawn and you lose a life. Reveal the whole word before the figure is complete and you win the round.
This version shows the category and the number of letters, so you always have a starting clue. You can type with your physical keyboard or tap the big on-screen letter keys on a phone. Letters you have already tried are greyed out (green for hits, red for misses), so you never waste a guess by accident.
Categories and difficulty
Choose a single category โ animals, fruits, countries, sports or everyday things โ or play all of them mixed. Difficulty changes how many wrong guesses you are allowed: Easy gives eight lives, Normal six (the traditional head, body, two arms and two legs) and Hard only four. Words are not repeated until you have seen many others, so long sessions stay fresh.
Strategy tips
- Vowels first. In English, E, A, O and I appear in most words. One or two vowel guesses usually expose the shape of the word.
- Then frequent consonants. T, N, S, R and L are the most common consonants. Rare letters such as Q, X, Z and J are best kept for when you already suspect the word.
- Think about the category. Countries often end in -IA or -AN, fruits often contain double letters (APPLE, CHERRY), animals often end in -ER or -O.
- Use the length. A seven-letter animal with E in second place narrows the options a lot โ try to picture real words instead of guessing letters blindly.
- Save the hint. The hint reveals a random hidden letter but costs one life, so it is most useful when you are stuck with several blanks and lives to spare.
Why hangman is good for you
Hangman is a favourite in classrooms because it practises spelling, vocabulary and letter patterns while feeling like a game. It is quick โ a round takes under a minute โ so it fits into a short break, and the streak counter gives you a reason to try just one more word. Your wins, current streak and best streak are saved only in your browser.
A short history
Word-guessing games of this kind have been played on paper for well over a century, and hangman became one of the most widely known travel and classroom games. Today it is also a common first programming project, but the simple rules are what keep it popular.
